Strengthening Our Communities rally

The Deval Patrick Committee is holding a rally, Strengthening Our Communities, June 21 at the Statehouse in support of the governor's Municipal Partnership Act.

MTA Members are urged to attend the 1 p.m. rally, then stay on Beacon Hill to lobby their representative and senator to support the MPA.

The MPA would provide cities and towns the option to provide employee health insurance through the Group Insurance Commission, if such an action is agreed to by the local public employee unions. This could reduce insurance costs for the municipalities and their employees. The MPA would also allow the public pension agency to put underperforming municipal pension plans into the state system in order to maximize the investment return on pension funds and safeguard the funding of future public employee pensions.

The MPA would also increase local revenues by allowing cities and towns to tax hotels and meals and close a loophole that exempts telecommunications companies from paying taxes on their poles.

The rally will begin at 1 p.m. at the Grand Staircase outside of the governor's office. Gov. Patrick is expected to address the rally.
