March to Support Public Higher Education!

MTA members are urged to show their support for public higher education in Massachusetts by participating in one of the rallies or marches taking place from the Berkshires to the State House October 2-7.

The MTA Executive Committee has voted to endorse the March Across the State to Defend Public Higher Education, which is sponsored by PHENOM (the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts). PHENOM works to unite faculty, staff, students and alumni across all 29 public college and university campuses to advocate for a well-funded and affordable public higher education system in Massachusetts.

“This is a great endeavor,” said MTA President Paul Toner. “It will do a lot to put public higher education front and center in the fall campaigns and help us build for the spring legislative season.”

The dramatic 100-mile walk is designed to draw attention to the funding crisis in public higher education. It begins on Saturday, October 2, at 11 a.m. at Berkshire Community College. After events and rallies at numerous locations, the walk will end with a big rally at the Massachusetts State House on October 7 at 1:30 pm, a day on which there will be actions all over the country in defense of public education.
