MTA SEI Endorsement and RETELL Advisory No. 5

Update on Course Registration for Year Two - 2013-2014

ONLY Core Academic Teachers with ELLs Should Enroll in SEI Endorsement Course

Only Core Academic Teachers with ELLs in their classroom may register for SEI Endorsement courses. Teachers must have at least one ELL while taking the course. A requirement for successful completion is to practice learning strategies with ELLs. If the educator has no ELLs enrolled, he or she will be unable to pass the course and will not be eligible to earn the SEI Endorsement.

Deadline for Enrollment in Fall and Full-Year SEI Courses Extended to September 20, 2013

This fall's SEI Endorsement courses are scheduled to begin on or after October 1, 2013.

Eligible educators have until September 20 to enroll either in fall course or full-year courses.

Enrollment in spring 2014 courses will remain open until at least November 15, 2013.

Withdrawal from SEI Endorsement Courses

Educators without ELLs who registered for fall courses should withdraw before the close of business on September 20.

Those educators without ELLs who registered for spring courses should withdraw before the close of business on November 15.

Updated Information

As of September 6, 2013:

  1. 8,542 teachers and 1,442 administrators have enrolled in SEI Endorsement courses.
  2. Spaces are available in some teacher trainings. Core Academic Teachers of ELLs and Administrators should register as soon as possible if the district is NOT over its cap.
  3. If the district is over its cap, teachers and administrators CANNOT register for either the course or the waitlist.
  4. DESE will NOT directly assign teachers to the cohort year.

Core Academic Teachers and Administrators with Preliminary License

After July 1, 2014, an educator working with a Preliminary License who has completed all other requirements for an Initial License CANNOT receive the Initial License without the SEI Endorsement.

Teachers and administrators with ONLY a Preliminary License must earn the SEI Endorsement this academic year. Educators still have five full years of employment to fulfill all other Initial license requirements.

If a Preliminary-Licensed educator has tried enrolling but has not been successful, he or shee may apply for a hardship extension. A link to this form is available under Quick Links on the left side of this e-letter.
