Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) reintroduced this week his Public Servant Retirement Protection Act (H.R. 1714), which would provide a partial fix of the Windfall Elimination Provision. As in last year's version, the bill would change the formula for calculating Social Security benefits for individuals who have income both from covered and non-covered employment. NEA supported the Brady bill last year as a first step toward full repeal. NEA's goal remains complete elimination of both the GPO and WEP.
Sen. Hutchison (R-TX) is expected to introduce a companion bill in the Senate shortly.
Support for Full Repeal Continues to Grow
Support for full repeal of the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision continues to grow. The House version of the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 147) now boasts 246 bipartisan cosponsors
