DOE hearings on charter school applications

The Department of Education has posted dates for public hearings on this year's final charter school proposals. The hearings are being scheduled more than a month earlier than in previous years.

The hearings will run from 4 - 6 p.m at the following locations:

Friday, December 2
Quinsigamond Community College
670 West Boylston St
Worcester

Thursday, December 8
Department of Education Office
350 Main Street
Malden

Friday, December 9
New Bedford Public Library
613 Pleasant St
New Bedford

Four proposals are under consideration. A fifth school, the Math and Science Charter High School of Lowell, did not file a final application. The remaining applicants are:

  • The 360-student Pioneer Charter School of Science, (Grades 7-12) targeting Revere, Chelsea, and Everett.
  • The 704-student Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School (Grades K-8) targeting Worcester and managed by the Michigan-based for-profit National Heritage Academies.
  • The 80-student Fall River Maritime Academy (Grades 5-8), targeting Fall River.
  • The 400-student New Bedford Global Learning Charter School (Grades 5-12) which is now a Horace Mann charter.
