Proposals due for 2009-2010 legislative session

A legislative session lasts for two years and at the beginning of a new two year session legislators introduce legislation that they would like considered during that two year period. Usually around 7,000 bills are filed and only a few hundred are signed into law. A new session will begin in January 2009. MTA will work with legislators to have bills that advance MTA’s mission filed for consideration. 

MTA seeks input from members on what legislation to file. These proposals then are reviewed by the MTA’s Government Relations Committee (GRC) which in turn makes a recommendation to the MTA Board of Directors for its approval of legislation to file.

Members may use this form to propose legislation to be filed by the MTA for the 2009-2010 legislative session. Members who want to propose legislation should forward suggestions to Julie Johnson (jjohnson@massteacher.org or 617-878-8315) by Tuesday, September 2.

The GRC will review these proposals as well as previously filed legislation. The GRC will make its recommendations to the Board of Directors for approval at their October Board meeting. Legislation will then be drafted, legislative sponsors will be secured and the bills will be filed by the legislature’s filing deadline in early January 2009.

You are welcome to testify on your proposal at either the GRC’s hearing at the Summer Conference in Williamstown on Wednesday, August 6, at 1:45 p.m. in Thompson Physics (TPL 205), or September 9 at the GRC’s meeting in Natick. Even if you are not able to personally testify, you are encouraged to submit written testimony or other materials to the GRC by September 9.
