Massachusetts Teachers Association President Matt Bach and Vice President Deb Gesualdo issued the following statement of support for members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra fighting for a fair contract:

The Massachusetts Teachers Association stands in solidarity with musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra seeking a fair contract.

The MTA applauds the members of the Boston Musicians’ Association for taking courageous, necessary action to demonstrate their willingness to withhold their labor before agreeing to a contract that devalues their work. By voting to authorize a strike should a fair contract not be reached, members of the BSO made labor history.

By voting to authorize a strike should a fair contract not be reached, members of the BSO made labor history.

BSO musicians, responding to the controversial firing of their musical director, are rightfully seeking more control over the symphony’s artistic direction. The BSO members’ expertise and excellence cannot be ignored when it comes to reaching an agreement that preserves the integrity of one of Boston’s cherished and world-renowned cultural institutions.

The MTA commends BSO musicians and their union for fighting for quality arts and culture and for the musicians responsible for it.
