MTA Annual Meeting delegates have elected Andover Education Association President Matt Bach and Malden Education Association President Deb Gesualdo as the president and vice president of the 117,000-member organization. They will take office on July 15.

MTA members elect new leadership team

Matt Bach was elected president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association Saturday at the 2026 MTA Annual Meeting of Delegates. Deb Gesualdo was elected vice president of the union.

Matt Bach was elected president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association Saturday at the 2026 MTA Annual Meeting of Delegates. Deb Gesualdo was elected vice president of the union.

Delegates met Friday and Saturday in Boston for the 181st MTA Annual Meeting to elect leaders, set a budget and vote on policy initiatives.

Bach is a history teacher and president of the Andover Education Association. He has served on MTA’s executive committee and board of directors.

Gesualdo is a music teacher and president of the Malden Education Association. She is a member of the MTA Board of Directors and NEA Board of Directors. She chairs the MTA Resolutions Committee and is a member of NEA’s Legislative Committee.

The new leaders begin their two-year terms on July 15.

Four awards were presented at the meeting.

The inaugural Distinguished Service in Public Higher Education was given to Adam Brieske-Ulenski, a faculty member at Bridgewater State University.

The MTA President’s Award was given to the California Teachers Association.

The MTA Friend of Education Award went to LUCE Immigration Justice Network of Massachusetts.

The MTA Friend of Labor Award was given to Education Minnesota.
