We Are Massachusetts Educators

We are a diverse group of education workers fighting for the public schools and colleges our students and our committees deserve. We are not new to this fight. Founded in 1845, the MTA has been a powerful voice for educators, students and the common good for nearly two centuries. The MTA is more than a union – We are a movement for public education.

MTA President Max Page
Public education, one of our nation’s greatest commitments, was invented here in Massachusetts. This is our heritage, and whose tradition you all carry forward. We were the first, and remain the finest, despite all that is challenging you and schools and colleges today. We will not give up the freedom to learn and the freedom to teach.

Collective Action in Our History

From 1969 to today, MTA locals have led 58 strikes that shaped public education in Massachusetts. Though strikes are illegal for public employees and rarely occur, there have been moments when members reached a breaking point and chose collective action despite the threat of fines, jail, and political opposition. Learn how these actions changed our history.
